Getting Close to One

Well the little stinker is closing in on one year old.  Her birthday is on Sunday the 18th.  She's toddling all over the place now.  She's decided it's fun to feed puffs and goldfish to The Boys, who take them ever so slowly and gently from her outstretched arm.  Sometimes they get one or two quick licks in before she gets tired of waiting and just eats it herself.  Meh, dogs and baby have all had their shots.  I could jump up off the couch and race over there to snatch it out of her hand before she pops it in her mouth.  I could...

Anyway, I've forgotten what it's like to not have her around.  So I jumped back in time to visit the blog in April of 2009 to see what I was feeling.  Apparently I moped around whining about how long this is taking a lot.  An incredible amount of time was wasted.  I could have been at Happy Hours and fabulous nightclubs.  Instead, I sat around waiting!  Uh, past self I just want to slap you (me?)!  Weekend trips to romantic places?  None!  I could have even taken Gregg with me.  I could have had a party and danced around the living room without shoes on and not broken my foot by stepping on one of the Fisher Price Little People who I swear can appear around the house with Twilight Zone creepiness.  I could have done wacky stuff like ate dinner before 9 PM or watched a newscast from start to finish without pausing the DVR.

The point is, your life changes incredibly when you become a parent.  And the change is for the better.  Sure there are lots of things we no longer do, and you could never have convinced me that reading Ten Friendly Fish four or five times in a row at one sitting or playing endless games of peek-a-boo were great ways to spend a Saturday night.  But I'm fascinated with the way an almost one year old changes and learns day by day.  And she does it all with her daddies wrapped around her finger laughing along with her.  So if you're waiting for your baby via adoption, or any other way, my advice is to go live it up.  It will help ease the wait and speed things along.  It's not like you'll never do it again (I have a Happy Hour coming up on Friday--yippie!) but those days will be few and far between.  You'll have a good time...but the best is yet to come!

"your life changes incredibly when you become a parent", that is for sure!! HEHEHEHE It's an amazing and magical adventure, a dimension to our lives that one can never possibly anticipate or visualize until it actually happens. Is it for everyone? Maybe. There are lots of people I'd say "do it" but there are equally as many for whom I think parenthood would be a disaster.

Enjoy your gorgeous little girl's impending milestone birthday!

Thanks Bobby for reminding me to go do all those things.. We're trying our best.. time has flown by since we started this journey full force a year ago. Working has filled a huge part of that waiting void. I'm so happy for you three. And tell Sabrina Happy Birthday for us and happy hour have one for me.

I'm glad there;s hope! As for living it up? I don't even remember what that's like. The last time we went camping was 2006. I think we'll try again this year, with any luck we will be interrupted with a trip to Africa. But, with our luck, it won't.

She is such a cutie, I can't blame you guys for being proud! Congrats!

Wow, almost one! Hard to believe, isn't it?

And I would totally let her eat the dog-licked puffs too. I grew up sharing popsicles with the dogs, and it never did me any harm. Exposure to a few dog germs is good for people, I think. I fully plan to take our (eventual) baby to our friends' dogs, and say "Here! Lick away!"

Not so sure about the dog-licked crackers but my friends with dogs would say it's cool; I'd say 'yuck'. For things changing, that's what we were waiting for, right? I laughed the nite I was up with my littlest and her big sister came home at about 1 pm, so we got to talk -- wouldn't have happened w/o the baby. Pretty cool stuff.

Great post. Love it! You are so right on with this. I know it's true. Since we've hit the second trimester, even more since we've seen that there's actually a baby in there, I can see the validity and desire for life outside of dreaming of babies. I still dream, but knowing our little girl is on the way changes things. I can think about other things because she IS coming. But mostly I'm dreaming of her! I'll try to take your advice and do something fun this weekend. :)

Great post. The waiting can be so hard, it's tough not to let it consume you. But you are right: it's a great time to do the things you know will be harder once a little one finally shows up.

Did someone break his foot?? On top of the backache??

Hope all's well in time to party for the b-day!

God I'm getting old. I've been following you guys for a year now?

Time goes by so fast, enjoy them while they are young because as they get older, they become teenagers, and well, oh never mind, you will see...lol

So, where did you say happy friday hour was?
