Adoption for Morons

The following conversation took place between me and a complete stranger at an event we attended...

Scene:  I'm coming back from the rest room with Sabrina in my arms as I had just changed her diaper.  Enter an early 30's looking pretty blond white girl.  She's wearing that dopey clueless look Sarah Palin gets when someone asks her a gotcha question like "How are you?".

Dopey Looking White Lady:  Oh I just wanted to tell you I've been watching your daughter play and she's just adorable!

Fabulous Me:  Oh, well thank you.  She's having fun.

DLWL:  So I wanted to ask, where did you get her?

Me:  (Irritated with the personal and inappropriate question from a perfect stranger.)  Well, she was born in Los Angeles, where we adopted her.

DLWL:  Oh maybe I should check out California.

Me:  I'm sorry?

DLWL:  Well I've been trying to get myself a black baby for some time now.

Me:  (Holding back from saying something guaranteed to make her cry.)  Yeah um, well, good luck with that.

Seriously?  Asshole.

WOW!!!!! I am surprised you held your tongue. More power to you. Or was it that your jaw had to be picked up off the floor first?

Wow! I really would NOT have been able to hold my tongue! Kudos to you!

Wow. Amazing. And I know the dumb Sarah Palin look well. The stupid things people say.

Yeah, I've had those type of comments before (thankfully not too often). Ugg.....

I agree with growfamilygrow! Make her cry! Let it rip!
Good golly.

No, you did the right thing. Someone that dumb and clueless isn't going to be helped if you give her what she deserves. She'll just think YOU are jerk.

Take the high road - good example for your lovely daughter.

Uhm....wow. You win. I will send you the "People say the stupidist things" of the year award for Christmas.

Um, wow. I have occasionally on the sperm bank forums seen people say something along the lines of "your baby is so cute; who's your donor?" (which also kind of gives me the creeps), but I think that might be taking it to a new level.

On a related note, have you seen the AbFab episode where Patsy and Edina insist on spending the day with Saffron's baby because mixed-race babies are so trendy? Yeah.

People are amazing.
Amazing.
Let's just hope the search continues to be difficult. Damn!

LOL @ Cats!

I love that episode, and I had to look it up...here's the exact quote:

"It makes a difference, darling, a mixed-race baby is the finest accessory a person in my position could ever have, sweetheart! Oh, my God, it's the must-have of the season! It's the CHANEL of babies!"

Yes it's horrible, but that's why we watch AbFab in the first place isn't it? Not for Edina's parenting tips I'm sure!

I'm waiting to hear the right come-back for this particular dumb white lady comment. One I *try* to use at the first notice I'm talking to an idiot (e.g., "where did you get her" is a big red flag). . . is my favorite response: "Oh, why do you ask?"

I am the mother of a biracial daugther and one day when we were at the beach and my daughter's hair was particularly "wild and curly" I had a young blonde bimbo come up to me and ask "how do you get her hair to do that?" my reply "sleep with a black man" .. I got the Sarah Palin look back . . seriously some people are so stupid.

I know exactly what you are saying... I think they want us to say they are from somewhere in Africa and Madonna almost f*#king Adopted them but we got to them first.. LOL .. Like U said Assholes.. I'm mean why do they even think the can be nosy in the first place like that.. If you ask questions like that to complete strangers and have no problem doing that maybe you shouldn't be raising children in the first place.. There are enough Sarah Palin's out there to last a lifetime.
